I loved this place when I was in State College. I used to have a craving for Indian food ALL the time and was too impatient to ask a friend or two to join me (because then I would have to wait to eat the food, noo way) so I would just go myself to catch that lunch buffet. I know a lot of people who prefer Indian Pavilion more when they want to go out for a group lunch or dinner, but I don't care for the nice interior decoration or the neatly set up tables and buffet area. Kaarma is small and simple. Most importantly, Kaarma serves perfect food and it made my belly happy every time I went there. I was never disappointed with their quality (I went almost every week). The owner is hardworking and gets to know their regular customers. This place seriously made me so happy after every meal. I never felt the same way at Indian Pavilion.

Pretty ordinary buffet spread. For some reason they serve noodles at this buffet, not really Indian style. They serve good biryani. Menu items are better here than Indian pavilion.

Don't bother with this place and just go down the way to Indian Pavilion where they won't rip you off. Kaarma is especially stingy with portions, and this is taking into account the relatively expensive price to begin with. I have ordered on several occasions the Chicken Vindaloo. At a maximum, you will see about 3 cubes of chicken inside of a large bowl that is mostly sauce. Chicken Saag? The menu describes this item as having cubes of chicken cooked in spinach puree. Negative. They mean spinach puree (essentially spinach sauce), because when I ordered it, there was NOT ONE SINGLE PIECE of chicken. If you enjoy getting deceived and robbed of your money.... only to then eat rice and oozy sauce... then still be hungry and having to go get a wrap from McLanahans to stop your stomach from grumbling, go to Kaarma.

My job occasionally brings me to Lewistown and I always drive the 30 miles to eat at Kaarma. The food is incredible! A group.of young and old were enjoying the lunch buffet - a great assortment of vegetarian and non-vegetarian entrees. Today I enjoyed chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, butter chicken, warm naan, balti chole, onion bhaji, tandoori chicken and eggplant all washed down with a mango lassi. Without question this is the best indian food I have ever eaten!!

Kaarma is Indian done right. Only complaint I've ever had is their portions tend to be small at dinner - however, the owner offered me free refills on rice, which was nice. Solution? Get the buffet. Their lunch buffet is cheap and very good. They switch up the entrees and side dishes often, along with the constant standby of chicken tikka/butter chicken. Their samosas are tasty, pakoras are great, naan is FANTASTIC, rice is well cooked (wish it had cumin seeds though). Their paneer is great, the lamb curry was very tasty, and their creamed spinach is delicious. This is coming from someone who doesn't eat vegetables that aren't fried or breaded. The service can be a little slow and in attentive sometimes, but when the owner has been in he's always been great to me and very pleasant. There's a lunch buffet every day except Sunday (closed), and dinner buffets on Saturday and special event weekends sometimes. The dinner buffet tends to be pricier dishes - not rare to see tandoori chicken, chicken lamb and fish curries. One VERY important thing to note is that the quality of the food is vastly superior to India Pavillion, which I usually only go to when Kaarma is closed. I've found many bones and pieces of gristle, fat and cartilage in my curries at India Pavillion, the meat at Kaarma is always very high quality. The music is admittedly horrible though, unless they're playing classical string covers of pop music (which is awesome as hell, for the record).

Ok. Kaarma is not open on Sundays. Both thier website and Yelp says it is. Website needs to be correct. Annoying to drive in from out of town to have this happen.

Really good chicken tikka masala. It's usually under $30, and Kaarma's chicken is very moist and really serves as the best part of the dish. Also, the takeout portions are large enough for leftovers. My wife has tried several other dishes and felt they were all good as well. Overall a good and affordable Indian place, especially for takeout.

I can't stop giggling when I think about the Daily Collegian article posted on the establishment's wall. The owner was interviewed when the place opened (it used to be a nice Caribean place) and he claimed that they would be revolutionizing the way that Indian Food is served in State College, by offering upscale fusion Indian cuisine. Yeah right. It's the same Indian food you get everywhere in town, only more expensive. Simply, I cannot see any reason as to why one would go there and pay $12 (no rice, + taxes + tip) for a small portion of overcooked chicken tikka, or tandoori chicken. Save your money, and go to Indian Pavilion at lunch time.

The lunch buffet at Kaarma is great, and wont leave your pocket empty either. At a cheap $7.95 you get your choice of over 8 items on the lunch buffet... And the quality is pretty decent. I really enjoyed our visit to Kaarma, and will be back for a well priced Indian fix!

I choose this place over Indian Pavilion all the time! The prices are cheaper and they have a decent variety, especially their lunch buffet that is only $8. Remind you, this is a college town and we're all broke students who are looking for a cheap meal with good quality and quantity.

After not eating food for a whole day, I was way too tired to cook something for myself, so where did I end up? Kaarma for the first time. Now, I've had this place when it was catered to events, but never actually sat down and ate here. When I first stepped inside, I thought, "Um this place looks pretty rundown and could pass for a sandwich spot." The seats and tables were literally deli/pizzeria-esque, and the area itself was pretty small. This literally must have been a sandwich or pizza spot before it became Kaarma. Nonetheless, I still came here for the food, and not the decor. My friend and I decided to order an appetizer (veggie platter, $5.95) and two meat dishes: chicken tikka ($10.95) and the lamb something($10.95). Now these prices already seemed a little on the expensive side to me, considering we're in a college town where 99% of the population carries less than $10 in the wallet. But, whatever, I'll give this place a shot since I've heard good things. The veggie platter was not bad. It came with 2 samosas, a potato cake thing, and some other things that were made of peas. On the side, there were two dipping sauces, one tangy, and one sourish. For $6, it wasn't a whole lot, but I've never had anything like the before, so it's good to try everything at least once. For the main entrees, I really expected a little more. The portion sizes were pretty small to be honest. If I had not stuffed myself with rice and naan, I would have still been hungry. There were probably 8 pieces of meat in each entree, and the rest was sauce. Granted, the food tasted just fine, but the portions seemed a little pricey consider what they charged. Service was pretty standard here too and the waitress let us split the bill in two. Kaarma. You look ghetto as hell, taste fine, but cost a lot. Somehow, that doesn't make sense.

Unbelievable! This place charges whatever they feel like at the time. There is no structure. Food is same as any other Indian place, nothing special.

Yum. Great indian food. They have sit down and take out. Staff has always been nice and they have had belly dancing from time to time.

Before going on a bar tour our only night in town, my husband and I decided to get a big dinner. Having a hard time deciding where to go (we were looking for a sit-down, affordable, veg-friendly place) we decided to just make the stop at Kaarma. It was near our hotel and I'm a sucker for Indian food. It was a bit dark inside, but the interior was nicely decorated and clean. We sat by the window and it was fun to watch the people on Beaver Ave go by. Our server was very friendly and attentive. After looking at the menu, we decided to stick with our same old staples we always get at Indian joints. We started off with the samosas. Although they weren't the best we've ever had, they were certainly good and we liked them. The saag paneer was full of those little cheese cubes of happiness, and that makes me a very happy girl. We really enjoyed it. The veggie korma was a little different than any kind we've ever had before (darker in color, a little different flavor), but was still really good. The rice, garlic naan, and mango lassi were all good as well. In all, we liked everything and didn't have any negative experiences. Was it as good as some other Indian restaurants I've been to? No. But it certainly wasn't the worst. And for State College, I think it's a great place to have a nice sit-down meal (when you can afford it as a student) and a good way to break up the normal Chinese/pizza/wings routine.

Very good! The other Indian place was closed so I stopped in here and was very happy. Very clean and staff was super attentive. I had the buffet and will be back next time I'm in happy valley. I tried every item on the buffet and loved every bite!

I went back again while in State College this July and was delighted again with the amazing lunch buffet- Chicken Makhani, Chicken Curry, Tandori Chicken, Vegetable Korma, Zucchini Makhani, Aloo Ghobi, Vegetable Pakoda, fresh Naan brought to the table, salad and two desserts Rice Pudding and Gulub Jamun... all for about $8.00. If I lived here I'd dine at Kaarma all the time.

If you love Indian cuisine, you must make your way to this restaurant. We had three people for dinner, and ordered too much food, but everything was absolutely delicious! They would have had 4 stars from me, if only not for the unfortunate event [see below]. We started with an order of vegetable samosas and veggie pakoras for appetizers. Also served was complimentary pappadum with sauce. The incongruent fact was that the sauces were served in small plastic take-out containers: for a dine-in service, in a restaurant where regular tableware was used, not plastic or paper single-use supplies. Samosas, served 2 per order, were huge and yummy. Pakoras were a bit too chopped up for my taste, but still quite flavorful. For the main course, we had Vegetable Vindaloo, Balti Chole (chickpeas with onions, tomato, ginger garlic & spices), and Chicken Tikka Masala. The chickpea dish was amazing - the texture, the flavors and spices were perfect. Vegetable vindaloo was killer spicy; but was replaced due to an unpleasant discovery of hair {ugh!!} amidst the ingredients. The second round was still spicy, but not "killer" lever: zesty, zingy, tickly - whatever way you want to describe, without setting one's mouth on fire. I loved it; and my daughter had plenty to take away in a doggy bag. Our guest loved her chicken dish, and again, as portions are generous, there was lots left to enjoy later. All was consumed with a BYO bottle of white wine [for those over 21]. The restaurant is a large open room, accommodates 36-40 indoors, and has 3 round tables outside. The weather was unseasonably warm for March, and the outdoor seating was in demand. The décor is Asian, with a mix of Indian and Thai art on the walls. The service was friendly, and relatively efficient - there were two servers on shift. Hopefully, they bring another waitress in for busier dinner services.

Don't let the lack of ambiance throw you- the food here is quite good. I've eaten both the lunch buffet and off the regular dinner menu many times and have never had a bad experience. My hubby loves the Paneer Burjee (nice and spicy) and I really love the Lamb Korma and Butter Chicken. The best thing on the menu? Kashmiri Naan. I know coconut and fennel in naan sounds weird...but it is amazingly tasty and does so well with all the dishes.

Overall, this is a good place. The food here tastes yummy - especially the korma, butter chicken, and paneer saag. However, I advise you to not go during the "lunch special" because the food quality is much worse. it's obvious they pre-cooked it all the night before or they simply microwaved it because I don't remember my saag tasting so bland and awful the night before! The waitresses are super friendly and service is pretty good. The only complaint I have about this place is the owner. He is beyond passive aggressive and stands around in a bad mood, waiting for some HUGE group to come in and feast so he can earn more money. He doesn't make conversation or even short talks. He doesn't look at you directly in the eye when you're addressing. He just says, "Yes" or "No" to literally everything in the most ridiculous tone - it's totally rude and he does it to others, as well. Thankfully, the tasty food and nice waitresses keep me coming here. But the owner definitely is rude for a fact.

Kaarma has some great vegetarian dishes which they will happily make vegan for you (just specify "no cream or dairy"). If you want bread, order "roti" which is completely vegan; "naan" uses dairy products. Kaarma uses fresh ingredients and the dishes are not as oily and heavy as other North Indian restaurants I've been to. Try the "mushroom muttar (peas)" or the "Bombay aloo (potatoes)" or 'channa' (chickpeas) dish. They also have Indo-Chinese dishes, which is unusual and nice to see. Sadly, they don't have any south Indian food. Portions are large and prices are low. The only complaint that I have is if you're vegan, you can only go for dinner, and only Monday-Friday, because Kaarma only serves a buffet for lunch, and all the dishes have cream pre-mixed (and they won't allow you to order off the menu). They only have the buffet on weekends, so vegans are out-of-luck then, too.

The food here is pretty good. Like their garlic naan and chicken vindaloo. We ordered from here a few times so far, takeout because like Scott M. wrote, the place isn't really too much to look at... . We plan to order from here again. This is a good option to have in State College.

The level of hate for Kaarma here is insane. India Pavilion doesn't hold a candle to Kaarma. There is no contest. The food is wonderful. Much better, and even cheaper, than India Pavilion. Most places worth eating out at in State College are only "good enough for State College," but this is a fine Indian restaurant in its own right. The lunch buffet does not have the widest selection, but the food is top-notch, so who cares? Wonderful naan. The vindaloo has here has its own distinctive sour-hot-deliciousness. I also particularly recommend the saag and the bhuna. What more to say? The owner is always around, and he and his wife are wonderful people. The service is consistently excellent, unlike India Pavilion. It's just a great restaurant to have into the community. (And to the earlier commenter Simon B., yes, they DID serve Indian-Chinese fusion cuisine when they opened, and it was excellent. But since downtown State College traffic is threeparts beer-swilling undergraduates bearing the palates of poorly-traveled slime molds and two parts sheltered mid-Pennsylvanians who are already pushed to their cultural limits by College Buffet... they had to revert to more "familiar" cuisine. Welcome to central PA.)

I went here for Valentine's Day a couple years ago and have been wanting to return ever since, but since I moved out of downtown I don't go downtown too often anymore. However, I remember lots of great things about this place! Their food is decently-priced, and the atmosphere was great - a cozy little place with beautiful tapestries on the walls and they had Vitamin String Quartet playing. :) Very soothing and romantic, especially for how small the space is. Everyone we spoke to there was nice as well, and we were happy that it wasn't very busy on V-day. The dishes come in large sharable bowls, typical of most Indian places I've been. The butter chicken was delicious as was the saffron rice! We got to-go boxes for the large amount that was left over, and had them add more rice to-go for a small charge. I'm going again tomorrow and hope it will still be great! I have heard from friends that their lunch buffet is not as good as what I remember dinner to being, so we are going to stick with going at dinner.

This is definitely the better of the indian places in State College. Ever since I was in NYC I have been craving indian food and I finally got to visit this place for the lunch buffet. For State College I think this place does a very good job, keeps pretty authentic food in a place that is not very authentic. They keep the naan flowing and most of the buffet dishes are kept very fresh and warm. Just like most buffets I go do I always complain about the spice level and even here after two tablespoons of "spicy sauce" I still miss the bite of NYC Indian. They offer a good assortment of options and even though the color of the green and white sauce seem off they have good flavor too. I will be back here, but I will still always miss the places from Curry Hill, NYC

Wow, I can't believe that there are so many Kaarma haters! Okay, maybe I can. When we first moved here, I too thought Kaarma might be "iffy" --especially after reading Keder D's review that everything was cream-laden. For any of you who have previously checked out the reviews and written off Kaarma as "meh", you might want to reconsider. (especially if you are vegan). This fall, I decided to give it another chance, and was so glad that I did. We've been here three times in the past three months and I only have positive things to say. Since my first dining experience, there have been several changes that totally elevate Kaarma over IP, and I think the Yelp world deserves to hear an update: 1. The buffet has changed. There are ALWAYS multiple (3+) vegan options. 2. The owners are super sweet, and have really stepped it up on service. 3. The dinner and take-out portions are generous, so no complaints about how "expensive" it is. Now I'm not really going to get into the whole decor bit. Is anyone going to come here and be woo'd by the wall treatments and table covers? Nope. Is it clean, pleasantly lit, and not super loud? Yup. Back to the buffet: the majority of the dishes are dairy-free (even those with meat) because of the many requests for vegan sauces -- beware, though, because the naan has butter. The owners are very courteous of food allergies, and will gladly answer any questions that you have. The selection changes every day, so you don't have to worry about getting the same ol' curry each time you are in . The food is also prepared as "mild", and those who are seeking spice can turn up the heat by adding the spicy sauces found at the beginning of the line (to be honest, I think that "mild" is the standard spice level for any ethnic eatery in town -- we are in the middle of Central PA, people. If you want spicy, ask for SPIIIIIICY). All in all, great food, good service, and (in my opinion) the better choice for Indian food in town. Thumbs up, Kaarma!

I ended up coming in here for the buffet since I ended up a little too late for India Pavilion's. The owner was a tad hesitant letting us in since they had a group coming in right after. It seemed odd, but we went in anyway. The buffet is much smaller. About 5 different dishes, with one dessert. The flavor was comparable to the Pavilion, but nothing that would justify throwing down another $3-4 for the buffet.

Excellent Indian food. The food is better than Indian pavillion, and this restaurant is actually clean.

Good lunch buffet. I thought I would like India Pavilion better, but after going to both, Karma was more comfortable, more pleasant staff, and the food was similar. I loved their naan, dessert, and creamy, yet not too tangy, buffet entrees. The owner was nice enough to keep the place open much later than their regular hours to accommodate our late lunch. Maybe India Pavilion was just too busy a place to enjoy, I simply know that I enjoyed my overall experience at Kaarma much more.

I love this place. Not your typical Indian food. It's a fusion of Indian and some dishes are a little Chinese. The lunch buffet is awesome and the naan is SO good. I am American and I like it but apparently I you are looking for authentic Indian cuisine then you are in the wrong town. I have been here numerous times an the service is ALWAYS excellent. It's also BYOB but I've never brought alcohol. I highly recommend this place.

  • Scott M.

I will admit this place is not much to look at. However, the food is fantastic. It goes beyond the usual Indian fare and clearly the chef has a sense of adventure. The Chicken Bhuna, a house specialty was exceptional, complex with sweetness and heat tempered with just a touch of sharp finish. Saag Paneer is an old favorite of mine and this one was as good as I have ever had even in London. The garlic Kulcha was also great. I know I will be going back as often as I can manage it. I hope this place stays around a while and can upgrade their digs a little. It could be a real standout restaurant for State College.

Kaarma is the worst of all restaurants in State College, PA. I repeat it is the worst restaurant ever. I have been living out here for the past 5 years and not a single time of my visit there has the owner been friendly. He is a DB, to start with and he is outright rude. In spite of being an Indian, he doesn't treat the Indians very well. Once we all (about 10 of us) went there with about 6-7 Americans and us 2 Indians. All the food we ordered were delivered after a 10-15 minute wait (long, but bearable!). However, the my Indian friend's food never came down even after 45 minutes. On top it, my food was also delayed by about 35 minutes. In spite of us expressing our discontent, the sick owner did not even offer a word of apology or explanation. I have more. Just when we were waiting for our food, we saw an American couple storm out of the restaurant in discontent. Apparently, they waited for about 20 minutes and when their food eventually came, it was not what they ordered. Crappy / Shady place. I strongly recommend not visiting this one. In the name of cheaper food, these people offer poor service. A huge NO to anyone who wants to visit here.

  • Emily A.

Poor service - I'll cut the one girl some slack because she said it was her first night, but even when she brought the manager over to answer our questions, he was none too polite or informative. Prices were good for the amount of food. Food itself was bland - I ordered my dish "medium hot" and the overwhelming seasoning was salt. A friend's "medium" was spicier than mine but not what would pass for "medium" in most Indian restaurants. The rice was dry and flavorless. Naan was the best thing we got. I might try again because I like Indian food a lot and maybe this was just a bad night, but after one visit, I am very much not impressed.

  • Rachel G.

When you enter a restaurant 45 minutes before it closes, and stay until a smidge after close, is it right for the manager and waitress to stare at you until you cede your money and GTFO? I'm not sure, but it definitely made our most recent eating experience at Kaarma pretty awkward. Add that to okay food (but better at India Pavilion!) and an unremarkable eating area, and you're left with an average meal with at most 2-star service and ambiance.

State College resident for 25 years, here. Never been a fan of India Pavillion, so after Masala (highly underrated) closed its doors I was thrilled when Kaarma came in. I think in the beginning there were some flaws, but they were fixed pretty quickly. I never got to try the Chinese fusion (and it sounds like it failed), but I always thought that was an AWESOME idea.. Anytime someone wants to meet for lunch on a Saturday, this is where I suggest. Rough day at work, need some comfort food and don't feel like cooking? Kaarma. Cannot believe some of the comments on here. ONE Indian person at your table had their order delayed/messed up and that means the owner doesn't treat the Indians well? What a simpleton. Honestly, considering how many times I've been to Kaarma personally, this person's experience sounds like an aberration. I've never once had a problem with my food or the service. If anything, the owner is reserved. Maybe not the best quality for someone in the food business, but he is a nice guy. His (I presume) wife is more outgoing and also extremely nice. The only criticism I could see for Kaarma is that they usually only employ one server. That seems to suit them well as most of their business is buffet oriented, but I could see how maybe a party of 10 plus the rest of the restaurant could get dicey service wise. Needless to say in spite of that one criticism, I've always been very satisfied. The food? OH YEAH! What we're here for! Awesome. Clean. Doesn't make you feel disgusting afterwards. Haters gonna hate.

I can't comment on the regular menu and service, but the lunch buffet is pretty tasty! I've gone on two different Fridays, each time we got a table really quickly. Then you just head over to the buffet so it's pretty quick. The food is good and they have a couple of vegetarian options. I wish they would put some descriptions with the dishes about ingredients and flavors though. It's a decent price for all-you-can-eat lunch, and they give you as much bread as you want. Overall it's quick, tasty, and not too expensive, so I think it's a good place for college students to stop in for a hearty lunch!

This place is absolutely fantastic. From the crisp bread that arrived as we were seated, to packing up our treasured leftovers, a great experience. We ordered the vegetable sampler platter appetizer and naan. The sampler was absolutely delicious. When the entrees arrived (chicken Bhuna and shrimp tawa masala), the plates were just flying back and forth across the table as neither of us could decide which we loved more. And I'm extremely glad we ordered that naan. Came in handy as we mopped up the rich, garlicky tomato of the tawa masala and the earthy, complex gravy of the Bhuna. And despite eating well past the point of fullness, we still walked out with another meal's worth of leftovers, ready to go - along with another order of naan. And you better believe we scraped up every bit of sauce into the takeout containers. Throughout our meal, service was prompt and friendly. The only downside? We're both pretty annoyed with ourselves for not getting here sooner.

I've had mixed experiences here. The decor isn't much. Their lunch buffet is good, but doesn't have the selection of India Pavillion. There are plenty of vegetarian options. The one time I was here for dinner (with a friend), both of our dishes came out burnt.

Kaarma is our favorite restaurant, EVER. The food is delicious, we've never tried something we didn't like. The buffet selection (both lunch and Saturday night) rotates a bit but there is always a nice spread. The naan is fantastic and the drinks we've tried are tasty as well. The place is simple on the inside, but it's very clean and attractive. It's not as flashy as the other Indian place in town (as of this writing), but it has a much more pleasant atmosphere. What really makes Kaarma stand out is the service. The owner takes a great deal of pride in his business and he is always out in the restaurant serving and interacting with the customers. There is never a rush to clear your table and they are always speedy with the naan during the buffet times. We love Kaarma!

Yes, I'm writing this from Colorado where we relocated last year. However, after a bad experience in an Indian place here, had to give Kaarma some love. We were hooked on Kaarma when we lived in State College. Any time I met my husband downtown for lunch, that's where I wanted to go. It was usually pretty crowded with students, but that ensured the food was always fresh and hot. The buffet selection was excellent. Never had a dish that wasn't delicious and piping hot. While the dining room is very basic, just a single room with small tables that are pretty close together, I didn't care. The food was excellent. Could have eaten there every week. Service was always excellent, even during their busiest lunches. We tried one Indian buffet place here and it didn't even come close to Kaarma. We'll be very sad if we can't locate one that's almost as good. We may have to start making our own Indian dishes to fight off my cravings for Kaarma. One of the only things I miss about State College.

Good lord I adore this place. At one point receiving the title NAAN BOY from one of the owners, Kaarma has a special place in my heart. I mainly go here for the buffet which include you Indian staples and unlimited Naan. I can recall many a food coma from this place. Their recipes for butter chicken and korma are tasty, and don't forget about galub jamun, those sweet sweet Indian balls. Oh ya don't forget your Mango Lassi, Yum!!! The service here is very cordial and the owners take the time to get to know their regulars. The inside is nothing to scream about, but do you care that much about ambiance when you are there to pig out on Indian food?

    (5)
  • Viraj K.

The rice was hard, tandoori chicken was raw, palak paneer tasted just baking soda out of a chemistry lab. The gulab jamun felt like I was chewing on rubber. A beautiful experience and a complete disgrace to my Indian taste pallet.
